Echigo-Tsumari Artists' Studio Competition 2011
Echigo-Tsumari is a small road side town about 200km NW of Tokyo.
An old house outside of town is used triennially for Australian artists to work there in interaction with local artists.
An artist friend has participated and thought would be nice for us to work together on a competition for new accommodation and studios to replace the old house which had been damaged by an earthquake.
The climate is extraordinary: tropical, hot and humid, in Summer but frigid in Winter with snow falls of 3m. The locals put poles against the old houses before winter, to divert the snow and brace the structure.
The inspiration, apart from the art was this climate, the ongoing need and desire for renewal and reflection on memories.
