<p>We've worked with Inkahoots, the thinking graphic designers, before&gt; They did our "new" identity, cards, web page etc. They are recognised and published globally and they share our concern for the environment. They were suddenly thrown out of their beautiful studio in West End.</p>
<p>But they had seen it coming and managed to buy a little timber and stucco Parthenon near the centre of West End: a little old Queensland workers cottage given some classical civilisation and its barbaric timber frame dressed up. In one sense a shame, but mainly a delightful potted history of the celebrated impacts of cultural groups on west End.</p>
<p>We have been given the opportunity to make this into a graphic design office and studio that can become a demonstration of sustainability. That is real sustainability not just the instruction manual star ratings and not just a lot of added technology. This is sustainability has social, cultural (ethos) and artistic dimension as well, but which is founded on simplicity and clarity.</p>
<p>A second residence has been added at the rear. The existing building will be tidied up and lifted a little to provide two levels of studio space. Elements have been added to improve views and shading. These give the place a clear new identity. Our sustainability make-over will be done which will make this a pleasant and healthy place in which to work.</p>
<p>After mid 2009 the project lived for a year and a half in the Brisbane City Council's development approval process. Construction Documentation happened in Architectus. Construction began in July 2011, then again in September (powerlines had to be upgraded). In this location the various authorities were able to throw everything at the project. Construction was completed in October 2012.</p>',

			'content' => '<p>A commission by the Centre for Subtropical design on hehalf of the ULDA.</p>
<p>The brief was to explore the urban design of a site near the railway statio and the future northern bus link. The rail line and the busway corridor cut the site off from the rest of Fitzgibbon to the NW. The site was a remnant with high conservation (endangered Glider Possum) and water management values.</p>
<p>The exploration of the urban design was integrated with the design of a series of "innovative" housing models -ones that actually respond to demographics and current ways of living as well as affortdability/sustainability.</p>

<p>The Turtle was selected as the most lovable incon. the Fraser Coast Council commissioned a large bronze which needs a home where it can be admired and help begin to tell the stories of the globally important flora and fauna of the river and its catchment.</p>

<p>The idea is to make the sculpture the centre of the attention and set people on pathways around the town and the region. The social, cultural and economic impacts can be significant.</p>',

			'content' => '<p>An international design competition was organised by the USA Chapter of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The competition was entitled Building a Sustainable World &ndash; Life in the Balance: Global Problems, Global Solutions.</p>
<p>70 entries were received from seven different countries with 12 entries short-listed. Jim Gall from Gall &amp; Medek and Tony Fry from Team DES travelled to Los Angeles in early June to make a spoken presentation to the judges. The judging panel included architects Ken Yeang and Thom Mayne.</p>
<p>The Gall &amp; Medek- Team DES entry was based on the redesign of Boonah and the Boonah Shire to sustainably provide for a population of 50 000 people by the year 2050.</p>
<p>This proposal came second in the international ideas competition.</p>
<p><strong>Context</strong><br />UK Chief Scientist, Sir David King asserted in April 2006 that a C3&deg; warming is now<br />inevitable (between 2070-2100). If this projection is correct it would bring about the following:<br />A permanent El Nino accompanied by major changes in the weather worldwide.<br />The total disappearance of the Greenland ice sheet<br />Major increases in extreme weather events<br />Major changes in ocean currents will totally transform the climate of Northern Europe<br />Rising sea levels heading towards 5m (ratio is 1m rise : 100m ingression) this level being<br />reached within 100-200 years<br />The collapse of many rainforests (with the Amazon being especially at risk)<br />The death of tropic coral reefs in the next 30 years<br />The spread of existing deserts in Africa, Australia and Western USA<br />Reductions in global food production, causing an additional 400 million people to experience<br />famine<br />World Bank and International Red Cross figures now suggest there will be up to 200 million<br />environmental refugees within thirty to fifty years. <p>The jury&rsquo;s assessment was lead by the vision, objectives and scope expressed in the competition document.</p>
<p>The jury considered how the resulting ideas and propositions could drive wider discussion and provoke, inform and inspire public debate.</p>
<p>Gall &amp; Medek and QCA team&rsquo;s submission was considered to best illustrate the issues to be faced given the predicted changes to potential flood levels in the near future. Its vision was largely conceptual, so was considered separate from the winner by some distance.</p>

<p>Long taken up for parks and industry the farming move out.</p>
<p>The recent construction of the Wivanhoe Dam turned the Brisbane River into a long estuary andprovided confidence to build housing on land that had a history of flooding. Much of this was flooded in 2011.</p>
<p>This project explores the possibilities of retaining population through localised increases in density by moving houses in a medium density form, to the edges of the alluvium, above flood waters. The soils can then be again considered for a productive ecosystem which will form a focus for community, learning and commercial transactions.</p>

<p>Gall &amp; Medek worked with planning and economic development consultants to develop a Tourism Strategy for the town. This was then developed into a revised layout for the town&rsquo;s groups of activities and key assets.</p>
<p>A number of pathways were designed to provide clear, legible connections and to heighten visitors&rsquo; perceptions of the space and its values. This lead to the conceptual design of a number of buildings and the design of street/landscape work which has been completed for some time now.</p>
<p>The design concepts comprise of preliminary plans and elevations, initial structural and material ideas and perspective sketches These are intended as a stimulus, for funding applications and for more detail feasibility studies.</p>',

<p>We've worked with Inkahoots, the thinking graphic designers, before&gt; They did our "new" identity, cards, web page etc. They are recognised and published globally and they share our concern for the environment. They were suddenly thrown out of their beautiful studio in West End.</p>
<p>But they had seen it coming and managed to buy a little timber and stucco Parthenon near the centre of West End: a little old Queensland workers cottage given some classical civilisation and its barbaric timber frame dressed up. In one sense a shame, but mainly a delightful potted history of the celebrated impacts of cultural groups on west End.</p>
<p>We have been given the opportunity to make this into a graphic design office and studio that can become a demonstration of sustainability. That is real sustainability not just the instruction manual star ratings and not just a lot of added technology. This is sustainability has social, cultural (ethos) and artistic dimension as well, but which is founded on simplicity and clarity.</p>
<p>A second residence has been added at the rear. The existing building will be tidied up and lifted a little to provide two levels of studio space. Elements have been added to improve views and shading. These give the place a clear new identity. Our sustainability make-over will be done which will make this a pleasant and healthy place in which to work.</p>
<p>After mid 2009 the project lived for a year and a half in the Brisbane City Council's development approval process. Construction Documentation happened in Architectus. Construction began in July 2011, then again in September (powerlines had to be upgraded). In this location the various authorities were able to throw everything at the project. Construction was completed in October 2012.</p>',

<p>The brief was to explore the urban design of a site near the railway statio and the future northern bus link. The rail line and the busway corridor cut the site off from the rest of Fitzgibbon to the NW. The site was a remnant with high conservation (endangered Glider Possum) and water management values.</p>
<p>The exploration of the urban design was integrated with the design of a series of "innovative" housing models -ones that actually respond to demographics and current ways of living as well as affortdability/sustainability.</p>

<p>The recent construction of the Wivanhoe Dam turned the Brisbane River into a long estuary andprovided confidence to build housing on land that had a history of flooding. Much of this was flooded in 2011.</p>
<p>This project explores the possibilities of retaining population through localised increases in density by moving houses in a medium density form, to the edges of the alluvium, above flood waters. The soils can then be again considered for a productive ecosystem which will form a focus for community, learning and commercial transactions.</p>

<p>Gall &amp; Medek worked with planning and economic development consultants to develop a Tourism Strategy for the town. This was then developed into a revised layout for the town&rsquo;s groups of activities and key assets.</p>
<p>A number of pathways were designed to provide clear, legible connections and to heighten visitors&rsquo; perceptions of the space and its values. This lead to the conceptual design of a number of buildings and the design of street/landscape work which has been completed for some time now.</p>
<p>The design concepts comprise of preliminary plans and elevations, initial structural and material ideas and perspective sketches These are intended as a stimulus, for funding applications and for more detail feasibility studies.</p>',

<p>We've worked with Inkahoots, the thinking graphic designers, before&gt; They did our "new" identity, cards, web page etc. They are recognised and published globally and they share our concern for the environment. They were suddenly thrown out of their beautiful studio in West End.</p>
<p>But they had seen it coming and managed to buy a little timber and stucco Parthenon near the centre of West End: a little old Queensland workers cottage given some classical civilisation and its barbaric timber frame dressed up. In one sense a shame, but mainly a delightful potted history of the celebrated impacts of cultural groups on west End.</p>
<p>We have been given the opportunity to make this into a graphic design office and studio that can become a demonstration of sustainability. That is real sustainability not just the instruction manual star ratings and not just a lot of added technology. This is sustainability has social, cultural (ethos) and artistic dimension as well, but which is founded on simplicity and clarity.</p>
<p>A second residence has been added at the rear. The existing building will be tidied up and lifted a little to provide two levels of studio space. Elements have been added to improve views and shading. These give the place a clear new identity. Our sustainability make-over will be done which will make this a pleasant and healthy place in which to work.</p>
<p>After mid 2009 the project lived for a year and a half in the Brisbane City Council's development approval process. Construction Documentation happened in Architectus. Construction began in July 2011, then again in September (powerlines had to be upgraded). In this location the various authorities were able to throw everything at the project. Construction was completed in October 2012.</p>',

<p>The brief was to explore the urban design of a site near the railway statio and the future northern bus link. The rail line and the busway corridor cut the site off from the rest of Fitzgibbon to the NW. The site was a remnant with high conservation (endangered Glider Possum) and water management values.</p>
<p>The exploration of the urban design was integrated with the design of a series of "innovative" housing models -ones that actually respond to demographics and current ways of living as well as affortdability/sustainability.</p>
<p>Instead of assembling a team of engineers and quantity surveyors to assist and advise the architect, our team included a highly experienced planner/urban designer/architect (Geoffrey Walker), a developer (Carl Yap) and strategic sustainabiltiy/design thinkers (Anne-Marie Willis, team DES and Petra Perollini, Qld College of Art).</p>

			'content' => '<p>Tiaro is the town on the banks of the famous Mary River. The Lungfish and Turtle (actually a tortoise) were recently saved from probably extinction by the cancellation of the Traverston Dam project.</p>
<p>The Turtle was selected as the most lovable incon. the Fraser Coast Council commissioned a large bronze which needs a home where it can be admired and help begin to tell the stories of the globally important flora and fauna of the river and its catchment.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The idea is to make the sculpture the centre of the attention and set people on pathways around the town and the region. The social, cultural and economic impacts can be significant.</p>',

			'content' => '<p>An international design competition was organised by the USA Chapter of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The competition was entitled Building a Sustainable World &ndash; Life in the Balance: Global Problems, Global Solutions.</p>
<p>70 entries were received from seven different countries with 12 entries short-listed. Jim Gall from Gall &amp; Medek and Tony Fry from Team DES travelled to Los Angeles in early June to make a spoken presentation to the judges. The judging panel included architects Ken Yeang and Thom Mayne.</p>
<p>The Gall &amp; Medek- Team DES entry was based on the redesign of Boonah and the Boonah Shire to sustainably provide for a population of 50 000 people by the year 2050.</p>
<p>This proposal came second in the international ideas competition.</p>
<p><strong>Context</strong><br />UK Chief Scientist, Sir David King asserted in April 2006 that a C3&deg; warming is now<br />inevitable (between 2070-2100). If this projection is correct it would bring about the following:<br />A permanent El Nino accompanied by major changes in the weather worldwide.<br />The total disappearance of the Greenland ice sheet<br />Major increases in extreme weather events<br />Major changes in ocean currents will totally transform the climate of Northern Europe<br />Rising sea levels heading towards 5m (ratio is 1m rise : 100m ingression) this level being<br />reached within 100-200 years<br />The collapse of many rainforests (with the Amazon being especially at risk)<br />The death of tropic coral reefs in the next 30 years<br />The spread of existing deserts in Africa, Australia and Western USA<br />Reductions in global food production, causing an additional 400 million people to experience<br />famine<br />World Bank and International Red Cross figures now suggest there will be up to 200 million<br />environmental refugees within thirty to fifty years. 			'content' => '<p>Gold Coast City Council recently held an 'Ideas Competition' to focus exploration of the future of the Cultural and Civic heart of the fast growing and ever changing city of the Gold Coast. The jury reviewed fifty-six conforming schemes.</p>
<p>The jury&rsquo;s assessment was lead by the vision, objectives and scope expressed in the competition document.</p>
<p>The jury considered how the resulting ideas and propositions could drive wider discussion and provoke, inform and inspire public debate.</p>
<p>Gall &amp; Medek and QCA team&rsquo;s submission was considered to best illustrate the issues to be faced given the predicted changes to potential flood levels in the near future. Its vision was largely conceptual, so was considered separate from the winner by some distance.</p>

<p>Jury Report - <br />This is a highly qualitative response to the Ideas Competition brief offering positive aspirations for the social, cultural, economic and environmental evolution of the subtropical coastal city over coming decades and beyond, using the Evandale site as a catalyst.</p>
<p>Examination of the submission reveals a nuanced outcome that is embedded in responsive communities and local distinctiveness. The importance of an identity based on the lifestyle advantages provided by the location&rsquo;s natural characteristics is taken into account at a profound level. The result is an approach that provides strong ideas for &lsquo;casting the city of the Gold Coast into a positions of global leadership&rsquo; in achieving long term care of community and place. Rather than spectacle and short-lived drama, this submission recognizes the symbolic values of the site and offers a plausible re-imagining of the Gold Coast city of the future that includes and celebrates the current city.</p>
<p>A conceptual mosaic accommodates future challenges including certain inundation, cultural diversification and reorganized urban patterns that include food production and knowledge industries. The submission demonstrates the authors&rsquo; knowledge of the cultural and creative life of the Gold Coast community and proposes ideas for two new kinds of cultural institution: a multiversity and an inter-cultural resort.</p>
<p>This submission adds valuable concepts to the dialogue regarding visions for Evandale and the Gold Coast City&rsquo;s future. It presents the possibilities of innovative thinking, and suggests actions for directing the incremental changes necessary for transforming the mental map of the city for residents and visitors.</p>

			'content' => '<p>The flood prone areas of Brisbane contain the best soils in the Catchment -quaternary alluvials. Brisbane has a long history of market garden food production in these areas, along the river and other streams.</p>
<p>Long taken up for parks and industry the farming move out.</p>
<p>The recent construction of the Wivanhoe Dam turned the Brisbane River into a long estuary andprovided confidence to build housing on land that had a history of flooding. Much of this was flooded in 2011.</p>
<p>This project explores the possibilities of retaining population through localised increases in density by moving houses in a medium density form, to the edges of the alluvium, above flood waters. The soils can then be again considered for a productive ecosystem which will form a focus for community, learning and commercial transactions.</p>

<p>Gall &amp; Medek worked with planning and economic development consultants to develop a Tourism Strategy for the town. This was then developed into a revised layout for the town&rsquo;s groups of activities and key assets.</p>
<p>A number of pathways were designed to provide clear, legible connections and to heighten visitors&rsquo; perceptions of the space and its values. This lead to the conceptual design of a number of buildings and the design of street/landscape work which has been completed for some time now.</p>
<p>The design concepts comprise of preliminary plans and elevations, initial structural and material ideas and perspective sketches These are intended as a stimulus, for funding applications and for more detail feasibility studies.</p>',

			'content' => '<p>Gold Coast City Council recently held an 'Ideas Competition' to focus exploration of the future of the Cultural and Civic heart of the fast growing and ever changing city of the Gold Coast. The jury reviewed fifty-six conforming schemes.</p>
<p>The jury&rsquo;s assessment was lead by the vision, objectives and scope expressed in the competition document.</p>
<p>The jury considered how the resulting ideas and propositions could drive wider discussion and provoke, inform and inspire public debate.</p>
<p>Gall &amp; Medek and QCA team&rsquo;s submission was considered to best illustrate the issues to be faced given the predicted changes to potential flood levels in the near future. Its vision was largely conceptual, so was considered separate from the winner by some distance.</p>

<p>Jury Report - <br />This is a highly qualitative response to the Ideas Competition brief offering positive aspirations for the social, cultural, economic and environmental evolution of the subtropical coastal city over coming decades and beyond, using the Evandale site as a catalyst.</p>
<p>Examination of the submission reveals a nuanced outcome that is embedded in responsive communities and local distinctiveness. The importance of an identity based on the lifestyle advantages provided by the location&rsquo;s natural characteristics is taken into account at a profound level. The result is an approach that provides strong ideas for &lsquo;casting the city of the Gold Coast into a positions of global leadership&rsquo; in achieving long term care of community and place. Rather than spectacle and short-lived drama, this submission recognizes the symbolic values of the site and offers a plausible re-imagining of the Gold Coast city of the future that includes and celebrates the current city.</p>
<p>A conceptual mosaic accommodates future challenges including certain inundation, cultural diversification and reorganized urban patterns that include food production and knowledge industries. The submission demonstrates the authors&rsquo; knowledge of the cultural and creative life of the Gold Coast community and proposes ideas for two new kinds of cultural institution: a multiversity and an inter-cultural resort.</p>
<p>This submission adds valuable concepts to the dialogue regarding visions for Evandale and the Gold Coast City&rsquo;s future. It presents the possibilities of innovative thinking, and suggests actions for directing the incremental changes necessary for transforming the mental map of the city for residents and visitors.</p>

			'content' => '<p>The flood prone areas of Brisbane contain the best soils in the Catchment -quaternary alluvials. Brisbane has a long history of market garden food production in these areas, along the river and other streams.</p>
<p>Long taken up for parks and industry the farming move out.</p>
<p>The recent construction of the Wivanhoe Dam turned the Brisbane River into a long estuary andprovided confidence to build housing on land that had a history of flooding. Much of this was flooded in 2011.</p>
<p>This project explores the possibilities of retaining population through localised increases in density by moving houses in a medium density form, to the edges of the alluvium, above flood waters. The soils can then be again considered for a productive ecosystem which will form a focus for community, learning and commercial transactions.</p>

			'content' => '<p>The heart of this project was a consultative and inclusive process that generated outcomes integrating economic development, tourism development and making the town a better place to live and visit (physically and experientially).</p>
<p>Gall &amp; Medek worked with planning and economic development consultants to develop a Tourism Strategy for the town. This was then developed into a revised layout for the town&rsquo;s groups of activities and key assets.</p>
<p>A number of pathways were designed to provide clear, legible connections and to heighten visitors&rsquo; perceptions of the space and its values. This lead to the conceptual design of a number of buildings and the design of street/landscape work which has been completed for some time now.</p>
<p>The design concepts comprise of preliminary plans and elevations, initial structural and material ideas and perspective sketches These are intended as a stimulus, for funding applications and for more detail feasibility studies.</p>',
